The MGA has just published its interim report for 2023, showing that the gaming industry in Malta contributed 9.5% to the Gross Value Added (GVA) in H1 2023, totalling €810.7 million, with an overall 12.2% contribution to the economy. Compared to H1 2022, the sector’s growth in value added was 1.1%. As of June 2023, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) had licensed 335 companies, with a total of 345 gaming licenses. Despite a slight decrease from the previous year, the industry remains resilient, collecting €41.2 million in various fees and taxes during H1 2023, showcasing its continued financial strength.
The gaming industry in Malta has continued to thrive in a challenging external environment characterised by an ever more difficult regulatory landscape, uncertainty from a tax perspective for the largest operators, and uncertainty regarding global growth forecasts, which, although remain generally strong, are being tempered by ongoing geopolitical tensions. Despite these headwinds, the gaming industry’s position in the Maltese economy remains strong, and furthermore, the gaming industry’s value added is poised to continue growing in the medium term, albeit with reduced momentum. According to a recent study, the gaming sector has been identified by investors as one of Malta’s top three leading business sectors, along with tourism and leisure, for the next five years.
